Others - including one woman who said she would be turning 90 this week - took turns to berate the farmer. There are fears that the spell of warm weather has encouraged the travellers to set off earlier than usual, meaning the town will host them for even longer. 'However this year they seem to have set off early, some people in town have been surprised by how many have started arriving when there is still almost four weeks before the horse fair actually starts.'
Travellers have traditionally started to congregate around Kirkby Stephen ahead of the ancient horse fair, using the high street to show and trade horses.All but one of its licensed premises plan to close for the duration of the horse fair season and it will be made more difficult for travellers to park their caravans along the rural roads leading to the town.
The gathering is billed as the biggest traditional gypsy fair in Europe and has developed traditions that take place every year.
