The notion that a ghoulish figure telling kids to self-harm had been exposed as a hoax but it was only a matter of time until trolls exploited the rumours.
Trolls are capitalising on the hype behind the Momo challenge and creating new videos that target children, digital experts have warned.
Digital expert Tash Courtenay-Smith said she thought it was a hoax until her young son became ‘extremely distressed’ after stumbling upon a video last week. However, her son Finn, 10, became terrified after it appeared while he was watching a YouTube clip of other youngsters playing Fifa. She added that by giving her children context they felt empowered because they now understand that Momo cannot harm them.‘They couldn’t foresee that people would think it’s funny to put horror clips in videos about Peppa Pig,’ she said.‘Modern media is evolving so quickly that the best thing we can do is empower children so they are not scared of Momo.’Cyber security expert Jake Moore said that communication between parents and children was key.
