The atmospheric heat switch remained stuck on “high” in D.C. on Monday, and for the third time in the last five days, the temperature reached 98 degrees.
While days have been notably hot, the mercury’s stubborn refusal to retreat after dark has meant nights are not cool enough for comfort. Overnight temperatures have often failed to offer much respite from daytime miseries. Sometimes, as they occasionally did on Monday, clouds have shielded the city from the full force of the sunshine. One layer of cloud was stacked on another to filter the light, create shadow and give a bit of protection.
