Official guidance recommends quarantining for those who have had unprotected direct contact with the virus.

Speaking to the BBC, Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser for UKHSA, said community transmission was occurring in the UK.

She added that there was currently no vaccine for monkeypox, but that close contacts of cases were being given an established smallpox vaccine. Another explanation is that the virus has found itself in the right place at the right time to thrive.
