Monster Hunter Wilds Director Obsessed With New Oilwell Basin Apex Predator

Yuya Tokuda, director of Monster Hunter Wilds, is ecstatic about the game's new Oilwell Basin and its terrifying apex predator, Nu Udra. Tokuda describes Nu Udra as a 'horrific affront to god,' a fiery squid-like creature that loves to belch, set itself on fire, and crush its prey with its tentacles. The development team considers Nu Udra a technical achievement, praising its intricate animations and the challenges it posed in terms of gameplay and design.

Yuya Tokuda, the director of the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds , is brimming with enthusiasm for the Oilwell Basin and its terrifying inhabitants. Tokuda describes the basin as a landscaped nightmare, imagining a deep ocean brought to the surface and then ignited. This fiery hellscape is the home of Nu Udra , a creature fans have dubbed a 'horrific affront to god.' Imagine a squid that has somehow adapted to life on land and is perpetually engulfed in flames.

In an interview and reveal, it's evident that Nu Udra's favorite pastimes involve belching with the screams of the damned, setting itself on fire, attempting to crush you with its multitude of tentacles, and writhing in agony. Its appearance is truly horrifying, with eyes reminiscent of deep-sea slugs. According to Tokuda, Nu Udra represents a significant technical achievement for the development team. 'Monsters with tentacles like that pose a lot of technical challenges,' Tokuda explains, 'Like controlling it with respect to the terrain and its target. When we began development on Wilds, the technical department's tests went incredibly well, and so we felt like we could really make it happen this time.'Tokuda recounts an anecdote about an animator who was particularly proud of Nu Udra's movements, especially its unsettling slithering into its lair. 'When we first implemented the movement of it going inside a hole, an animator told me, 'When you weaken it and it starts heading back to its nest, please wait here for a moment!' … They wanted me to see it going into its little hole, and I still remember replying, 'Oh, that really is amazing!' The animator looked so satisfied as well.' Tokuda emphasizes that Nu Udra's design wasn't just about creating a terrifying monster, but also about pushing the boundaries of what was technically possible. 'While there are countless proposals that I've had rejected due to technical reasons, it feels like I'm finally getting to attempt one of those this time around.'
