MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce doesn’t want crime concerns to deter business from coming to the city. That’s why they invited business leaders and high-ranking city officials to attend a panel featuring law enforcement and those involved with the legal system to hear potential solutions firsthand.
It was the first public appearance for interim Montgomery Police Chief Jim Graboys, and the chamber is excited to see what his administration can do. Graboys heavily emphasized community policing, and he wasn’t the only panelist to do so. Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham stressed that community policing is about more than patrolling.
Cunningham also stressed gun laws like Alabama’s permitless carry law have caused a rise in gun violence. During the panel, he questioned “What kind of world are we living in that people don’t need a valid ID to carry a firearm?”
