The Montgomery City Council approved a new downtown district designed to spur growth in the local tourism industry. MONTGOMERY , Ala. - The Montgomery City Council Tuesday approved a new downtown district designed to spur growth in the local tourism industry. The ‘tourism improvement district’ covers an area of downtown in which business owners have agreed to impose a fee on their bottom lines. The fee is expected to generate over $2 million a year for the city.
“It will mean $2.2 million annually to put back into marketing for destination-based tourism, making sure our occupancy rate and our lodging is as full as it can be,” said Mayor Steven Reed. “It will also provide safer opportunities for visitors who are coming here for conventions.” The money generated by the district will be used in various ways, including advertising expenses to promote Montgomery, efforts to attract more conventions & sporting events, and projects to beautify tourism-heavy areas.
Montgomery is the second Alabama city to approve such a district, which the state legislature authorized earlier this year. Mobile created a similar district in 2020.
