Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed unveiled a new initiative to crack down on crime. MONTGOMERY , Ala. - Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed unveiled a new initiative that’s been cracking down on crime in the city in recent months: the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit .

“This is something that initiated with us reaching out to our sheriff’s office, reaching out to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and they were very, very receptive,” Reed said. “It’s really about the results that we’re looking for, and that’s why we’re proud to do this several months ago.” It was created in response to a recent spike in crime. For weeks, Montgomery residents packed City Hall, concerned about their safety. Many of them begged the City Council for help.

“We’ve been trying to figure out how to address those who are most dangerous to our society, those that have been repeat offenders, and those that we see as being really key to the crime surge that we saw in the second quarter of this year,” said Reed. Along with the new initiative, Reed is praising his interim police chief. Jim Graboys was appointed just weeks ago, and the mayor says he hit the ground running. His first order of business was to implement a“I know he’s been very active to really try to listen to our rank-and-file officers,” Reed said.
