The event allowed students to meet school staff while offering resources and a look at after school activities.
MONTGOMERY , Ala. - The first day of school can be a lot to take in for students. Parents with kids in Montgomery Public Schools were able to make that first day less intimidating at a “ Back -to-School Bash ” where kids could meet their teachers beforehand.
“Being able to meet their teachers ahead of time at an event like this, a more relaxed event where there’s games, food, it makes it easier for them to transition to that first day of school,” expressed Matt Smith, a father of four.“I see there’s a place over there where they can sign up for karate, you got places where they can do instruments and learn different instruments, they got sports programs in here,” he explained.
MPS Superintendent Dr. Melvin Brown is excited for students to utilize new initiatives that the school system is offering this year. “We have an early college program kicking off with Trenholm State this year that’s going to start with our kids, so identifying kids in the 10th grade who will be able to graduate from us with an associate’s degree from Trenholm State, we’re excited about that,” Dr. Brown said. “We have some new measures for security that are going into place, a new bus routing system, there’s so many great things happening.
For any questions or concerns about transportation to school, MPS is offering a limited-time free hotline to answer inquiries: 223-6900. It’s available Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Aug. 7, and from Aug. 8-16 it will be available Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
