The Bulgaria international will undergo surgery in the coming days and is highly unlikely to return to action in 2024. Gruev limped off the pitch after 20 minutes following treatment, leaving manager Daniel Farke unable to provide an update during Wednesday's pre-Sunderland press conference.
A club statement confirmed the severity of the injury, stating that Gruev sustained a “significant injury to his meniscus” and will require “an extended period of rehabilitation”. This news comes as another blow to Leeds, who are already without Ethan Ampadu due to a lateral knee ligament injury sustained just three days earlier. With both midfielders out, Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell are expected to start in the coming weeks
