Autumn is the perfect time to carry out pruning in the garden and Monty Don has shared the one plant that needs to be pruned hard before winter really sets in to grow more flowers
Autumn is the prime time for gardeners to embrace pruning tasks, ensuring plants that have flourished in the summer are prepped for colder months.
Monty, sharing his expertise in his monthly gardening column, has encouraged climbing rose owners to arm themselves with secateurs. On the subject of these climbing beauties, he advised: "Climbing roses flower on shoots grown the same spring so they can be pruned hard now." It's important to arrange the primary stems evenly and as horizontally as possible, securing them to supports like wire or trellis structures. Then, the lateral shoots which were this year's blooming factories ought to be trimmed down to just a handful of leaves.
The RHS offered further guidance, they said: "If the plant is heavily congested, cut out any really old branches from the base to promote new growth."
