Scientists in China plan to send more than a dozen satellites around the moon to get accurate navigation data.
After placing a total of 21 satellites in four types of orbits, the system could give accurate positioning for any place on the lunar surface.
It will also provide situation monitoring for the development of lunar space, which can meet the needs of follow-up major national lunar exploration projects, according to a paper published last month in the journal,The plan is set to be executed in three phases and satellites will be deployed in four types of orbits to maintain a
“Our study presented a road map to assemble such a constellation step by step, expanding its coverage from the lunar south pole region to the entire moon.” The satellite serves as a relay platform for the fourth phase of China’s lunar exploration program, providing communications services for Chang’e-4, Chang’e-6, Chang’e-7, and Long March-8 missions.
