if either Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak now suddenly drop out of the party’s leadership election, former Cabinet minister David Davis has urged., either Sunak or Truss would automatically become the party’s leader, and therefore Prime Minister, if their opponent withdrew their candidacy at this stage.
But Mr Davis, the former Brexit Secretary, called for contingency plans to be put in place for a rule change to allow MPs’ third choice to be put immediately on the ballot.in the earlier round of the contest, said that the key was to allow rank and file members to retain a say over the outcome, and not repeat the situation in 2016 when Andrea Leadsom pulled out of the contest and Theresa May was elected by default without a membership vote.
