The Cass Review calls for gender services to match the standards of other NHS care
Liverpool’s leading LGBTQ+ charity has said “listening to trans and non-binary voices is more crucial than ever”.
The report's conclusions make several recommendations on how gender services should operate moving forward including the need for further research and safeguarding measures. This is because, in the eyes of Dr Cass, children have been let down by the failure to base gender care on evidence-based research.
The review came about after a sharp rise in referrals to the now-closed Gender Identity and Development Service . Whistleblowers flagged concerns about the care provided by Gids, which at the time was England’s only youth gender clinic. “More than ever, it is crucial that their voices are heard, especially when it comes to decisions that impact their right to equitable healthcare. We continue to encourage all practitioners and others supporting Trans and nonbinary people to listen to and ensure their actions reflect the needs of the individual person.”
