The number of parents being taken to court for not making sure their children go to school has risen by 15,725% over the last 15 years in one part of Merseyside. Across England, 487,344 penalty notices for unauthorised absences were issued with 443,322 being for unauthorised holiday absences during the academic year between 2023 and 2024. The number of times children have been taken on holiday without permission has risen by 93,141 over a single year.

” The government has promised to tackle school absences and get more children back into classrooms. In September 2024, Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson said face-to-face attendance was important, adding: “High levels of absence harm the children who come to school as well as those who stay at home.
