LET's continue with the first building block of power: generation. How do we make power and how much does it cost? Just this week there were two interesting articles on generation in the New York Times and Financial Times. The most comprehensive and interesting article I have read in the main press (versus specialized industry and trade press) is 'The clean energy future is arriving faster than you think' which was published by the New York Times on August 13. I also found the Financial Times August 13 article 'Republican districts dominate US clean technology investment boom' interesting, mainly to show how out of step and hypocritical right-wing climate deniers and fossil fuel bloviators on the rabid right are. I suppose in our paper, Cut and Paste, who I suppose fancies himself as Mr. Karbon is just Mr. Uling, given the realities and prospects for coal. When it comes to renewable energy the facts and data show that as the famous and oft repeated Arab proverb goes — 'The dogs may bark, but the caravan rolls on.'

What is the most revealing part of the New York Times article? The total cost of running various types of generating plants on a levelized or basis. That is what our homegrown nuclear power-loving advocates fail to get. They simplistically and incompletely look at the operating cost of a fully depreciated nuclear plant and think it is so cheap.

'The LCOE is calculated by adding up all costs of production, divided by the total amount of energy it is expected to generate.' What is the actual levelized cost of generating power as provided in the New York Times article? It is very instructive. Costs may be higher across the board for the Philippines and smaller markets. The figures below are in US dollars per megawatt:– Solar: $60 – Wind: $50 – Natural gas: $70 – Coal: $117 – Nuclear: $180 Well, well, well.
