The charity fears more pets are being given up
There were over 300 abandoned animal reports made to RSPCA last year in Northamptonshire. The charity fears a rise in pet ownership during the pandemic, coupled with the cost of living crisis, is straining people’s finances and more animals are being given up.
In the UK, a total of 38,087 reports were made to the charity’s cruelty line last year. This is an average of over 3,000 reports a month, 104 a day or four abandoned animals every hour.Last August in Northamptonshire, the RSPCA rescued a hamster who was abandoned in a cage which was left in a bush. The hamster was found last August by a concerned member of the public, who kindly took the hamster home and reported the incident to the RSPCA.
Ann said: “We are grateful to the member of the public who found the hamster and kept him safe until we were able to collect.
