More than one half of pregnant women are now starting their terms overweight or obese, new figures suggest.
Of the wider group studied, 50.4 per cent were overweight or obese at their first NHS appointment during the 2016/17 year, up from 47.3 per cent the year before. Professor Russell Viner, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health , said: ‘Every parent wants to give their baby the best start in life, however this raises several red flags for both women’s and children’s health.’He continued: ‘For mothers, being overweight during pregnancy comes with significant risks.
