Are beauty pageants a thing of the past, or are they bringing female empowerment to the forefront of their events? Thoughts?
since the vote - the last couple of years have been spectacular for celebrating women and their achievements.
And as we move forward, it's only right to look at tradition and question whether it still has a place in today's society. With thecompetition attracting more applications than ever before - reaching more than 20,000 this year - we asked two writers to share their opinions on the culture - have pageants had their time?
"Pageants celebrate body positivity, confidence, hard work and they are more than just skin deep." Katy Van Hemelryk, a Miss England 2018 competitor. While many argue that beauty pageants focus too much on skin-deep beauty, I couldn't disagree more. I'm not naive enough to think that appearance doesn't play a part in Miss England, but my experience in the competition has proved that we are judged on how we present ourselves and our confidence on stage, not on whether we are conventionally beautiful or have society's definition of 'the perfect body'.
