At least 1,000 people have been killed after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco, officials have said. Many of the fatalities are said to be in hard-to-reach areas south of Marrakech.
A resident of a mountainside village close to the epicentre of the earthquake has made a desperate plea for help.
He told CNN:"First, I thought someone was knocking on my door, then I thought a plane crashed, because our hotel is very close to the airport. Morocco's own match against Liberia on Saturday night, which was to be held in Agadir, has already been called off. It's a significant move by the government there, given it broke off relations with its fellow North African nation in 2021.
So far the Moroccan government has suggested international aid isn't necessary despite offers from the likes of the UK and US.The number of people killed in the earthquake has now reached 1,037, according to Moroccan state TV.The numbers are rising as emergency workers try to access more remote and rural communities around the Atlas Mountains south of Marrakech, where the epicentre of the 6.8 magnitude tremor was.
