The technology is not loved by everyone, especially shoppers with full trolleys

Morrisons has announced it is to rip some self-checkouts out of supermarkets as it gets more staff back on the tills. Chief executive Rami Baitiéh told The Telegraph that Morrisons “went a bit too far” in rolling out self-checkouts and will now reverse its policy on the technology.

One branch in Brough, Yorkshire, has already removed four self-service checkout and replaced them with manned tills. Asda chief financial officer Michael Gleeson said his chain is investing £30million in getting staff back onto tills. Booths, which has 28 stores, is making the move in all but two stores - which are based in Cumbria. The northern supermarket also has branches in Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire.

The company told the BBC its philosophy since 1847 is to "sell the best goods available, in attractive stores, staffed with first class assistants". Shoppers felt abandoned without any assistance from staff at the till, reflecting poorly on the shop. The majority of stores have launched self-service checkouts, and they're meant to be faster, easier and slash costs
