69 per cent of those who voted Conservative in 2019 said they supported the measure to help renters
ExclusiveAccording to the Ipsos poll, 69 per cent of those who voted Conservative in the 2019 general election said they supported rent controlOverall, seven in ten – 71 per cent – of people said they supported the introduction of rent controls in England, so that rents in the private sector do not rise by more than the national inflation rate.
At present there is no rent control in England or Wales, and introducing such regulation is not a Conservative, Labour or Liberal Democrat policy.Ben Marshall, research director at Ipsos, said that the “consensus” on rent control amongst Labour and Tory voters, as well as among private renters, social renters and homeowners, was “striking” and suggested that most voters support “decisive action and delivery” on the housing crisis.
A total of 70 per cent of respondents to the Ipsos poll agreed there is a housing crisis. This figure has been consistent, representing a “flatline trend” for more than 10 years, Mr Marshall said.
