The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is calling for an end to the stagnant MOT price caps, warning of potential price increases for these crucial vehicle safety examinations. The IGA highlights the financial challenges faced by garage businesses due to static MOT fees combined with soaring operating costs, driven by inflation and recent fiscal measures. The association fears garages may shift focus away from MOTs to maintain profitability, potentially impacting road safety and the economy.
Drivers may soon experience a hike in MOT prices for the first time in over a decade. The Independent Garage Association has made a strident call for the termination of "stagnant MOT price caps", suggesting that companies could potentially ramp up charges for these critical examinations.
Stuart James, Chief Executive Officer of the IGA, expressed his deep concerns: "MOT tests are an essential tool for maintaining vehicle safety and ensuring air quality, as they check vital safety components and monitor exhaust emissions. However, the financial pressures on some garages are increasingly jeopardising their ability to prioritise this vital service."
