A mother was left disgusted after her Christmas gift for her daughter, a new iPad, was replaced with a hot water bottle by Currys. Lisa Griffiths contacted the retailer after receiving the unexpected item, but was initially told she would have to return the hot water bottle before receiving her iPad. However, after returning the item, she was informed that an investigation showed an iPad had been delivered. Despite her insistence that she never received an iPad, Currys stood by its decision. However, after contacting MailOnline, Currys reconsidered the case and issued a full refund and compensation to Mrs Griffiths.
A mother was left 'fuming' after her daughter never received her Christmas gift, a new iPad she purchased from a high street retailer. Lisa Griffiths, 40, from Chapstow in Monmouthshire, Wales, wanted to treat her 14-year-old daughter to a new Apple iPad with 256GB in pink, priced at £479, from Currys. Given the high value of the item, the iPad was intended to be her daughter's main present for Christmas.
When Black Friday came along, Mrs Griffiths enthusiastically sought out an online deal and ordered the device on 29 November 2024. But a few days later, instead of receiving an iPad, the office manager was shocked to discover something very different inside the package - a microwaveable hot water bottle worth a fraction of her purchased item. \Mrs Griffiths contacted Currys immediately and was asked to return the hot water bottle. The retailer concluded after an investigation that neither Currys or DPD were at fault and an iPad had been delivered, leaving Mrs Griffiths nearly £500 out of pocket. However, after being contacted by MailOnline, Currys looked into the matter again and confirmed the hot water bottle received by Mrs Griffiths was not one stocked by the retailer. \Lisa Griffiths from Chapstow in Monmouthshire, Wales was left 'fuming' that her daughter never received her Christmas gift after she bought an iPad from Currys - because when she opened her parcel all it contained was a hot water bottle. Mrs Griffiths wanted to treat her 14-year-old daughter to a new Apple iPad with 256GB priced at £479 from Currys, similar to the one pictured. Instead of receiving the device she paid almost £500 for however, Mrs Griffiths was shocked to discover her package contained a hot water bottle (file pic). It has now overturned its decision and issued a refund, as well as compensation. Speaking to MailOnline about her ordeal, Mrs Griffith said: 'When it arrived, it was in an A4-sized Jiffy bag. It looked like an iPad would be inside. It was the same size as a rectangular Apple box, but when I opened the parcel there was no such box inside. 'Instead there was a microwavable hot water bottle. 'I didn't open the box or anything like that. I immediately picked up the phone to Currys and said, 'Look, I ordered an iPad, and you've delivered this hot water bottle. 'At first they were very, very apologetic, but they told me I would have to return the item before they would then dispatch the iPad.' Mrs Griffiths said she was annoyed at having to arrange for the package to be picked up again by a courier so it could be returned, but felt confident it was a simple error and she would receive her iPad. However, after returning the item, she was then informed she would need to wait while Currys investigated. Mrs Griffiths said during this time she contacted customer service but said she was given few updates and described the treatment she received as 'absolutely shocking'. 'I filled it in, and one of the questions on there was whether the packaging had been tampered with. From memory it was in a sealed Jiffy bag. I would have noticed if there were any holes in it, but there was nothing. 'And then I had to keep going back again and again for updates.' Christmas Day came and went, but Mrs Griffiths said she finally received an email update from Currys - on New Year's Day. 'They told me they had carried out the investigation and sent me a picture of the DPD guy handing over the package at the door. They basically said we believe that we've delivered an iPad and they couldn't help me any further. 'I was so stressed before Christmas, because I couldn't afford to buy another iPad for my daughter and just the cost of getting another present. 'Then to receive an email like that on New Year's Day, which is supposed to be a time spent with my family, I was like, you've got to be kidding me.' She was originally advised that she could appeal the retailer's decision through Consumer Arbitration, though this process can take months.
