Mother of alleged Lucy Letby victim 'knew something was wrong’ but trusted nurse ‘completely’ 🔴 Ms Letby, 32, is accused of murdering seven children while working on the neonatal ward at Countess of Chester Hospital

A mother who allegedly interrupted a nurse who was attacking her newborn son wept as she told a court she “knew something was very wrong” but “trusted her completely”, the Lucy Letby trial has heard.

Child E’s mother told jurors that before that night, her twin boys were doing “really well” and the family were waiting for two ambulances to become available to transfer them to a hospital nearer to home. As she entered the unit she said she “heard my son crying, and it was like nothing I had heard before.”

“I tried that to do that to make him feel calm and comfortable, I tried to do that and it didn’t work. “ “[Ms Letby] said the registrar was on his way and if there was a problem someone would ring up to the neonatal ward.”Child E’s mother said she returned to the post-natal ward but rang her husband because she was so worried by what had happened. “I knew there was something very wrong,” she added, as she broke down in tears in the witness box.

Child E’s mother said she wasn’t able to speak to her husband herself because she was too upset. “I knew there was something wrong, I had known from leaving him… but I left,” she said.“At that moment I didn’t feel I was able to,” she said. “I was just broken, and I couldn’t, so Lucy Letby bathed him in front of me in the neonatal unit.

Child E’s mother told the jury of a conversation she had with a doctor about the possibility of a post-mortem examination. “I think my husband asked some questions and I think they were along the lines of, ‘What will a post-mortem tell us?'” she said.
