A new report reveals that 28% of mothers constantly or often worry about meeting their children's basic needs due to financial struggles. The report urges the government to lift benefit caps, support mothers in finding well-paid work, and consider universal benefits to alleviate these concerns.

This compares to 18 per cent of fathers. In total 24 per cent of all parents are either often worried or constantly worried.Parents of larger families were more likely to say they are “constantly worried” about meeting the costs, with 16 per cent agreeing compared to 10 per cent of parents in general.
But she argued that pushing for economic growth before tackling welfare and public services was the wrong way of approaching the issue. Some benefits should be universal, rather than means-tested, and child benefit should be restored to pre-2010 levels by rising to £30 a week, it said. It is reported to affect an estimated two million children in the UK – about one in 10 – and leave low-income families £3,200 a year worse off for each child over the limit.
She went on: “The Government might think they are saving on the welfare bill but they are actually facing those costs in other departments.”
