For Katie McCay, climbing to Mount Everest's base camp was always a dream.'I have been obsessed with Everest ever since I was a kid,' McCay told Newsweek.The avid hiker has tracked her travels on TikTok. McCay heard about a group geared to plus-sized and slower hikers for a March climb and, along with a friend, immediately jumped on the opportunity to visit the world's tallest mountain.
Local Nepalese companies have since started to guide people up Everest, Janow said, giving prospective mountaineers more options. It had previously been common for climbers to go through a European, U.S. or New Zealand-based company.The reopening of the Tibet side is adding to the crowds. This year, China allowed foreigners to cross via Tibet for the first time after a four-year pandemic closure.
