The girls needed a spectacular comeback to earn team championship No. 33 while the boys cruised to title No. 28.
The 32-time state champion Spartans girls team lost a Class 6A state championship second round doubles match to St. Paul’s and coach Susan Farlow thought the steak of six straight titles might end.
The boys team also won the title, dominating by scoring 84 points to second-place Hartselle’s 39. Boys competitors won to every singles and doubles final match, taking five of six singles and all three doubles. No. 2 doubles Coleman and Lacey split with Northridge’s Kate Thom and Alexandra Salekin 6-2, 2-6, setting up the super tiebreaker, which means the first to 10 points with a two-point margin wins the match.
The win tied the team score 69-all with St. Paul’s and when Mountain Brook’s No. 1 doubles finished off its final set with a 6-0 win, the team title was secured. The team win marked the second team state championship for the Lacey twins, Mae Mae and Annie, after helping the volleyball team to the Class 6A title in November.
