Two Nottingham MPs have called on East Midlands Railway to halt plans for the restriction of access to Nottingham railway station until "transparent discussions" take place. Concerns were raised during that trial about accessibility, inconvenience for fare-paying passengers and reduced footfall for businesses on Station Street. Yet after analysing trial data, EMR claims restricting access will save it £1.1 million a year. In a joint statement made after an emergency meeting took place earlier today, the MPs said: "We are extremely disappointed that East Midlands Railway has once again taken decisions about the overbridge at Nottingham railway station without any discussion with local businesses, the council or MPs, despite having promised to do just that during the trial closure last year.
"However, it is far from clear that closing access to platforms from the overbridge is the best way to achieve these objectives. EMR has agreed to share with us its detailed findings from the trial and consultation, including its equality impact assessment, which we will scrutinise carefully."
