Teachers at Montgomery Public Schools will now have more leeway in their classroom management system.
The Montgomery County Board of Education unanimously agreed to enact their version of the Teachers Bill of Rights .
The Teacher’s Bill of Rights would allow teachers to remove students from the classroom for disruptive behavior or threatening, abusing, or intimidating teachers or other students, something that was not previously defined by state laws. It also allows teachers to appeal the principal’s decision on punishment with the superintendent if they do not feel proper action was taken against the student.“I think we for the most part, we do a very good job of making sure we consequence things appropriately,” Brown said.
MPS has added tiers of disciplinary action, including a phone call, parent-teacher conferences, teacher-principal conferences and other intervention techniques. “They have to be part of the process,” Brown said. “They have to understand the consequences for actions that take place and assist the school district in terms of how we go about making sure those things don’t happen again.
