Adrian Portelli, who is known for craning a luxury car to his 57th-storey penthouse apartment, says he would rather spend tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees than pay a fine.

Flamboyant businessman Adrian Portelli has vowed to fight a driving charge on principle after he lost control of his car in Melbourne’s northwest more than two years ago.

The Sunshine Magistrates’ Court heard on Wednesday that police had dropped two charges against Portelli and were only proceeding with a single charge of causing the wheels of his car to lose traction, which he intends to contest.Portelli told reporters outside court on Wednesday that he was happy about the dropped charges, but would rather spend tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees than pay the fine.

Adrian Portelli says he is fighting the charge on principle. He said that whether Portelli would accept a diversion – a way for low-level offenders to avoid a criminal record – was irrelevant because it would require Portelli to admit to the offending, when he intended to contest it. On his social media accounts, he displays extravagant wealth, posing with Lamborghinis. On his Instagram, the phrase “Live Fast” is on his biography.

‘Wouldn’t change a thing’: Kevin McCarthy talks after being ousted as House Speaker‘Wouldn’t change a thing’: Kevin McCarthy talks after being ousted as House SpeakerKevin McCarthy has spoken out after being ousted as Speaker for the House of Representatives saying he “will not run for speaker again”. Mr McCarthy says he doesn’t “regret” standing up for choosing “government over grievance”. “It is my responsibility – it is my job,” Mr McCarthy said during a media conference on Wednesday. “I do not regret negotiating ... I don’t regret my efforts to build coalitions and find solutions – I was raised to solve problems, not create them. “I may have lost a vote today – but as I walk out of this chamber, I feel fortunate to have served the American people.” Mr McCarthy says he leaves the speakership with a sense of “pride, accomplishment” and “optimism.” “My mission has always been to make tomorrow better than today – I fought for what I believe in – and I believe in this country of America,” he said. “My goals have not changed – my ability to fight is just in a different form. “I will not run for Speaker again – I’ll have the conference pick somebody else.”
