The scheme is aimed at addressing traffic issues at one of Northern Ireland's busiest junctions
More than £23million of taxpayers' money has been spent on the delayed York Street Interchange project before construction work has even started.
The project, which is estimated to cost around £165million, was included in the New Decade New Approach Agreement which restored Stormont power-sharing back in 2020. "The last figures I received were also from John O’Dowd when he was a Minister previously, and the £23.7m he has most recently quoted is an increase of £1.4million on his previous answer from June 2022.
He said: "This is an outdated car first plan that was dreamed up before the declaration of a Climate Emergency by the Assembly. I ensured that Belfast City Council withdrew it’s support unless any revised scheme meets the air quality, housing, environment and "place making" objectives of the City. Public inquiries into the plans were held back in 2015, but work was held up following a legal challenge to the tendering process.
