A new study published in the American Journal of Public Health explores the factors influencing COVID-19 vaccination rates within a network of community health centers (CHCs). Researchers analyzed electronic health records to identify associations between CHC characteristics, patient demographics, and vaccination status.

American Public Health AssociationOct 3 2024 The COVID-19 vaccine, introduced in December 2022, played a critical role in reducing mortality and morbidity related to the pandemic globally. Yet, by 2023, only 70% of the US population had completed the primary vaccination series.

The researchers analyzed electronic health records of OCHIN, a non-profit health equity innovation center. They examined CHC-related factors such as location , Medicaid expansion, patient volume, alongside patient-level factors like sex, race, income and insurance status. The study also considered comorbidities like diabetes and obesity.

Lower vaccination rates were particularly evident among established patients in states that did not expand Medicaid. These findings highlight the challenges faced by patients in non-Medicaid expansion states, where access to health services, including vaccines, remains a significant issue pointing to the need for policy interventions that can address these disparities and improve access to essential healthcare.
