She is one of millions of low-income parents across the country who struggle financially during the summer break as a result of having to contend with the costs of food for children who would otherwise receive free school meals. ‘The only other option then is to buy cheap, which doesn’t last as long, then there’s also the stigma associated with that’.
Director of policy and research at the Children’s Society, Sam Royston called on the government to publish statutory guidance on school uniforms, which at present only asks governing bodies to give consideration to costs of uniform and is not legally binding. He also said that the charity’s work showed that the high cost of uniform was ‘pushing low income families into debt’, and highlighted the example of one child being sent home from school for having the ‘incorrect shoes’, because the family couldn’t afford the shoes that were required.’
