A mum-of-two has claimed she was violently raped by murderer John Cannan when she was just nine-years-old.
But the investigation was eventually shut down by the force which said there was no prospect of conviction 'due to the passage of time'. She feels let down by the system. Speaking exclusively to BirminghamLive, from Australia where she now lives, the married mum claimed the assault happened 42 years ago when she was walking towards her family home in Goosemoor Lane, Erdington.
Melanie described the man who attacked her as having sideburns, bushy eyebrows, "an odd haircut", wearing tight blue jeans, a brownish/red bomber jacket - which was cut above the waist - and a black shirt. He wore a brown and gold belt and shoes that clicked on the pavement as he walked, she said. Melanie claims it was here where she was choked unconscious sexually assaulted and raped. "The memories I have are horrific," she said. "He forced me into a room upstairs where there was already a mattress on the floor. He had items ready inside; rope to tie me up. It felt very planned out.""I kept freaking out because I thought it was a trick," she said. "I tried to run out the gully when the chance arose but he grabbed me.
Close to home, Melanie said she played along with Cannan before running up to her house and banging on the door. “He was terrified when he saw my brother and ran off. My brother was mad at me. He told me not to talk to strangers. He was quite intimidating at the time, my brother, especially if I was in trouble."View gallery Melanie said she remembers being curled up in a ball on her bed later that night, still wearing her coat, "in complete shock" and "immense pain".
