A mum fears young black men will no longer go to the police for help after she recorded her terrified son being searched by officers.when she came across her son Kaymari, 16, who had been detained by two policemen.She said the officers claimed he had been stopped because they thought he may be carrying a weapon.supports HTML5 videoAn angry June recorded the interaction and then went to a police station to confront officers with the footage and to make a formal complaint.
‘Once that damage has been done, that child – and those young people who witnessed it as well – go away thinking, “Wow if I see the police, the first thing I’m going to do is turn and run”.’‘Get that complaint in, and then we as an organisation can investigate that, and restore some of his trust that we will do the right thing.’She said young men may be forced to take things into their own hands as a result.
‘Watching Kaymari struggle with that is so destroying. I just try and be there. I try to show them love, but even in spite of all of that, things go wrong. I’m not only fearing something happening to him from his peers, sometimes it’s what happens from the police.’ June said she now feared her son could be harmed both by his peers and the police following the search.BBC Three’s Our Borough: Love & Hustle follows several people living in Tottenham following the murder of three youngsters in the area and is available on iPlayer.
