Schoolgirl Gemma Caffrey died of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST) but had been waking up with headaches in the days prior to her death.
The devastated mum of a schoolgirl who died from a hidden brain condition has warned of a "red flag" symptom that should be known by all parents.
Her parents Alison, 50, and Graeme, 52, now hope to educate other parents about the warning signs to prevent other families experiencing the same tragedy."Me and my husband Graeme did not know anything about this being a red flag, and if we did, we would have taken Gemma straight to the hospital. We now know this is a clear symptom of CVST.
Gemma began waking up with headaches in the morning of September 30, 2021, but her parents weren't too worried as they wouldn't last all day. At first, Alison and Graeme thought it could be down to hormones, a new glasses prescription, or migraines - which she had previously suffered from when she was younger.
