'It's always bad news all the time. We need a break and the break that we need is a stem cell donor'
A mum-of-two who's been battling acute myeloid leukaemia for almost a year is hoping a stem cell donor can help her beat the blood cancer.
The Co Tyrone woman says they were not prepared for the news her baby sister had become the third person in their family struck by cancer, after non Hodgkin lymphoma claimed their dad, Alan Smith's life, a week after his diagnosis and their big sister Diane fought breast cancer twice. "She was worried about it. She just got worse and she still kept working - but that's the kind of her - but on the twelfth of May she just knew she had to go to the hospital. She was done."Initially they just thought she was very anaemic... because of the headaches they did a CT scan to rule out a bleeding brain. The SWAH was in touch with the haematology ward in Belfast and they confirmed she had leukaemia.
"After the first round she took a condition called HLH, which basically causes inflammation in the body so her liver was under pressure too. There have been all sorts of complications along the way. I can only describe the situation as traumatic. "It was a wild shock. It's always bad news all the time. We need a break and the break that we need is a stem cell donor.
