Sibylle Schwarz, a mother of two, endured months of a persistent cough that was initially dismissed by medical professionals. She eventually received a diagnosis of advanced esophageal cancer, prompting a battle for her life and a fight for recognition of her serious symptoms.
Sibylle Schwarz, a mum of two living near Preston, Lancashire, initially thought her persistent cough was a common cold picked up from her children's nursery. However, as the months passed, her symptoms failed to improve.
"I went back to the GP in June and there was a different receptionist,” Sibylle says. "But she also said to go to the pharmacy. I told her I really, really needed to see a doctor and she booked me in for an appointment. “Then after the endoscopy, the surgeon apologised for being so presumptuous and told me the news that I had cancer. She discovered it was quite advanced, and that I might have only six to 12 months to live."
"She was very pessimistic and said she was unsure if she could take it out through surgery. I said, ‘If you can't, then just close me up again, and that’s fine. I want you to try. I’d rather die than not try.’ And she did, and luckily, she could take it all out." “During treatment, I only thought about my kids. My daughter had already gone through a lot. We had a bit of a rough start in her life and then we moved from Germany to Lancashire, so she lost all her friends. I didn’t want her to lose her mother, too. I was always thinking about that.
