Mum's heartache at telling her kids their grandad had been murdered as they feared killers would come for them
As Charley Wilkinson tucks her little boys into bed at night she gives them a hug and a kiss and promises to protect them.
In July last year, Mark's life was cut cruelly short when a row at a house in Blackpool turned to violence, and he was brutally stabbed to death. As a youngster Charley spent less time with her dad, due to what she called "teenage stubbornness" but in recent years the father and daughter had become close. Mark taught both Charley's children, aged nine and six, to ride their bikes and enjoyed watching the boys pedalling down the seafront in Blackpool.
"I did not want to believe what I was hearing but I could not escape the reality of it all and this was so much more upsetting seeing and hearing all of this information." "How do you explain to two young boys that the man they look up to has been taken away from them? This was so hard to put into words as I not only had to sit down and tell them that their grandad had died but that he had been killed. You cannot even comprehend how difficult that was for me emotionally or them to hear."
Charley bravely sat in the public gallery as CCTV footage of her dad's final moments was played repeatedly in court. She watched in horror as the man she looked up to fell backwards over a wall, fatally injured.
