Michelle Sparman, 48, from London, died by suicide in a hospital shower room after seeking therapy for emotional abuse by her ex-partner.
Michelle Sparman, a 48-year-old mother from Battersea, southwest London, tragically ended her life in the shower room on the Rose Ward at Queen Mary's Hospital in Roehampton on August 24, 2021. Michelle had voluntarily admitted herself to the hospital three days prior following an overdose. An inquest into her death at Inner West London Coroners' Court revealed that Michelle had sought therapy, expressing her struggles with her ex-partner, Roger Stephens.
In October 2020, Michelle confided in a GP about difficulties following their separation. A month later, she self-referred to Talk Wandsworth, a talking therapy service, detailing the emotional turmoil she endured. She described feeling overwhelmed by her ex's constant presence, his attempts to reconcile, and his blame-shifting tactics. Michelle stated that she felt like she was 'walking on eggshells' and that her ex-partner would berate her, telling her she was 'breaking up the family'. He would often cry and express his longing for her, making her feel guilty, while simultaneously resorting to emotional, verbal, and psychological abuse.During therapy sessions, Michelle shared her feelings of being overwhelmed and stressed, attributing it to her ex-partner's constant messages that made her feel uneasy and anxious. Despite seeking help, Michelle tragically died by suicide after being admitted to the hospital following another overdose. The Coroner concluded that Michelle was able to end her life using an item she 'should never have had'. A therapist from Talk Wandsworth, Danielle Megranahan, testified that Michelle should have been referred to a domestic abuse charity, acknowledging that opportunities to mitigate the impact of her situation were missed. Mr. Stephens, though unrepresented in the inquest, acknowledged sending excessive text messages and acknowledged making Michelle's life 'very difficult'.
