Louise Child was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia on 17 April 2021
A Lancashire mum who found out she had cancer at 32 weeks pregnant, passed away just over a year after her diagnosis, leaving behind her devastated fiance and two children.
On Saturday 17 April, the couple received a call from the hospital and at around 9pm that evening, Louise was asked to head straight to the haematology ward. Only two hours later, Louise and Don's lives changed forever. "But I just told her we'd get through it and I'd be there to hold her hand." On the following Monday, 19 April Harvey was born via C-section - an hour later, Louise started on chemotherapy drugs.
Over Christmas of 2021, Louise underwent a stem cell transplant and had to be in an isolated ward for eight weeks, something Don describes as "gruelling". The mum-of-two wasn't allowed to leave the room, but once the period was over and she returned home to Blackburn, Louise felt as though her condition was improving.
Don described this time with much reflection, he said: "We did lots of activities together, we went to the beach for a day and Louise loves the beach. This was good because if we were at the ward, we wouldn't have been able to do things like that."
