Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. presided over his first joint command conference of the Department of National Defense and Armed Forces of the Philippines on Wednesday where current issues, plans and programs of the defense and military establishments were discussed.

Defense spokesman Arsenio “Popong” Andolong said senior defense and military officials tackled pressing matters during the joint conference, including the proposed reform to the military and uniformed pension scheme. Under the current pension system, uniformed personnel are not contributing a part of their pay for their pensions. Instead the government fund their pensions by way of appropriations.

The defense chief could not say whether he is in favor of the proposed pension changes or the retention of the current set up pending a deeper study.
