Knifeman accused of murder acted in self defence after fearing he'd be stabbed, jury told
A knifeman accused of murdering a man in 'retaliation' told a jury he was acting in self defence after seeing a gun and fearing he would be stabbed. Rushaun Brown, 24, claimed Neri Morse was armed with a knife and that he had a gun stored in his car.
"It was a hot, nice day so we went to go get some drinks," Mr Brown said under questioning from his barrister, Anthony Berry KC. He said that shortly after walking into the shop, Neri and Driece Morse entered. Jurors have heard Driece Morse and Mr Leahong were holding knives. Mr Brown said he threw a punch and that bottles were being thrown.
Mr Brown denied there was any conversation about this, and said he was expecting to return home to Ardwick. The Golf and the Seat were in stationary traffic on Carruthers Street and Mr Brown claimed that those in the car continued making 'death threats'. "I decided to get out of the car because I didn't want the situation to escalate any further, and I wanted to go and confront him." Mr Brown said he found a knife in the car and picked it up.
Jurors heard that dashcam footage captured Mr Brown making 'two or three stabbing motions'. "There was no intent, just to disable him," he said. "I didn't even know where I was aiming at that point."
