'I was off my head on drugs and one thing led to another and I ended up stabbing him'
A custody officer at Preston police station has told a court one of the men accused of murdering Lee Dawson told him he had stabbed him, and was going to plead guilty.
Speaking from the witness box at Preston Crown Court, Mr Jackson said Wilcock said he "hoped his family would accept it". He said Wilcock had spoken to his family on the phone and they accepted "everyone makes mistakes" but were struggling that he had taken a man's life. The barrister continued: "When are you going to tell the jury he said, 'I didn't even do it'?", however Mr Jackson said he did not hear the defendant say that. Mr Storrie KC asked: "Does that lead us to think you may not have caught everything that was said and that you may have misunderstood?"
"I asked if there was a reason they were all drinking in the early hours of the morning and Lee Dawson explained to me that he was attending a funeral that day and they were all associates who knew the deceased." PC Thompson told the court his colleague then left in her police car while he returned to the van to update the incident log. However, while he was completing the log, a call came over the radio reporting a man had been stabbed. At first he did not link the incidents, however PC Wilcox radioed that it was Lee Dawson, and PC Thompson went back to the flat in Driscoll Street.
Mr Dawson's left lung collapsed, but the effect of the severed arteries meant his heart would have failed leading him to collapse in less than a minute, she said.
