Rick Haworth, owner of a Bolton-based clinic, utilizes a unique steel bar technique known as instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) to alleviate muscle pain and scar tissue. His treatment, dubbed the 'Muscle Scraper' on social media, helped him recover from a debilitating shoulder injury after other therapies failed. He now assists others in overcoming similar pain and limitations.
These photographs might initially suggest a brawl or a tumble down the stairs, but they actually depict the results of a physical therapy treatment intended to help everyone from office workers to athletes. This method, known as instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization ( IASTM ), is practiced by Rick Haworth at his clinic in Bolton. Nicknamed the ' Muscle Scraper ' on social media, the 40-year-old utilizes a unique steel bar to alleviate tension from scar tissue and muscle knots.
Despite the startling appearance of the images, Rick assures that the redness observed is an indication of the technique's effectiveness. Rick, from Farnworth, was inspired to launch his own business after experiencing IASTM treatment firsthand in 2018. He suffered three separate shoulder injuries during a brutal rugby tackle, leaving him unable to move his arm properly for a whole year. Despite trying NHS and private physiotherapy, sports massages, and acupuncture, Rick claims that nothing enabled his arm to move beyond a 90-degree angle. That all changed when he was introduced to IASTM, a technique that involves pressing a surgical steel bar up and down patients' bodies to reach deeper into knots and scar tissue. Encouraged by the results, Rick decided to give it a try. Remarkably, after just one session, Rick was able to return to his beloved gym - a feat doctors had told him he would never achieve again. This transformative experience led him to open his own IASTM clinic in 2022, where he now assists others who find themselves in similar situations. 'I got injured and needed surgery on my shoulder,' he told the M.E.N. 'Nothing could fix me. I had NHS and private physiotherapy. I had sports massages every week and acupuncture, but my arm wouldn’t move past 90 degrees after surgery. 'I basically lived in a sling at the time – my arm wouldn’t move. Someone showed me this technique and I gave it a shot. After one session, I was back in the gym. 'This changed my life, so it’s so nice to be able to help other people. It sounds corny when I say this, but everyone who comes through the door is me three years ago. 'I gave up hope. My surgeon wrote me off, saying I’d never go back to the gym, and that I had early-onset arthritis at 34 years old. 'Getting written off by medical professionals to now helping people every day – I’m in the gym six days a week.' Rick states that the method not only alleviates joint and muscle pain but also helps with migraines. However, he encourages people not to be deterred by the red marks, emphasizing that the pain is temporary and subsides quickly after the session ends. ' It is more painful, but it works for a hell of a lot longer,' he added. 'I’ve had people come to me once and I’ve fixed them. Some clients I haven’t seen for two or three years. 'I get people travelling from all over. I have one woman who comes from Abu Dhabi, another who comes from Nice. People fly over all the time. 'People have been in pain for years upon years – they come to me for one or two sessions, and they’re treated and done. It’s amazing.' Although the majority of his treatments are successful, Rick admits that he has had approximately 12 clients walk out of their sessions mid-way through. 'I’ve only ever had 12 people walk off,' he said. 'I’m not there to torture people – I’ll always work within a pain threshold. 'People don’t come to me for a first time expecting comfort. The people I put on my social media pages are in the funny videos – the ones who scream or shout. 'The people who watch my videos love it. Some people sing, shout, or call me names under the sun. 'I’ve had three people fall asleep. Some find it really relaxing. One person I called “the Joker”, they laughed all the way through. 'One woman sang opera the entire time. People even tell me they’re going to punch me in the face.
