The production highlights a pioneering civil-rights activist who was also the oldest park ranger in the nation before retiring in 2022
The saga of Betty Reid Soskin — 102-year-old civil-rights activist, pioneering Black entrepreneur and former Richmond park ranger — is one of the Bay Area’s proudest stories, and “Sign My Name to Freedom” brings that story to life through words, dance and music.
“Sign My Name to Freedom,” adapted from and named after Soskin’s 2018 autobiography, is the true story of Soskin’s life, using songs she wrote and performed during the civil-rights movement in the 1960s. “I love creating a narrative out of something that is a little unexpected,” Carter said in an interview with The Examiner.

“The fabric ripples, it whips around, it covers Little Betty, it swirls around the stage with the dancers manipulating it,” Carter said. The cast includes seven dancers, three of whom are aerialists who perform on ladders and prop windows.
