Musk's $1m cash giveaways could be illegal, experts say

The tech billionaire handed out the first million-dollar prizes at Trump-supporting events over the weekend

Elon Musk awarded Kristine Fishell with a $1m cheque during a town hall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“There would be few doubts about the legality if every Pennsylvania-based petition signer were eligible, but conditioning the payments on registration arguably violates the law,” he said. To be eligible for the $1m, petition signers must be a registered voter and live in one of the seven swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, according to the America PAC website.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said on Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Musk’s plan to give money to registered voters in Pennsylvania is “deeply concerning” and “something that law enforcement could take a look at.”
