Elon Musk's criticism of the F-35 fighter jet reignites debate about the military's need for expensive manned aircraft in the face of budget constraints and the increasing effectiveness of drones.
Elon Musk, known for his push to reduce waste in the US federal government, has recently targeted the Pentagon's expensive F-35 fighter jet fleet. As a proponent of autonomous technology , Musk has spent weeks criticizing the Lockheed Martin-built aircraft on social media.
His comments have intensified a debate within the defense industry: Does the military still require costly manned fighter jets when budgets are strained and advanced drones are proving effective in conflicts like the one in Ukraine? Lorenz Meier, CEO of US-based Auterion, a company developing software for autonomous drone swarms, believes the shift from mainframe computers to personal devices is comparable to the potential future of military aircraft. He questions if these large manned platforms will remain as relevant as unmanned, expendable systems become more sophisticated. While Auterion doesn't advocate abandoning crewed systems, Meier acknowledges the need to address the fundamental question surrounding their future role in light of rapid advancements in AI-powered unmanned systems. In the US, the Air Force has delayed a decision on the next generation fighter jet program (NGAD) originally scheduled for the end of 2024. This means the incoming Trump administration will decide on the program's future. Lockheed Martin stated its commitment to working with the new administration, echoing its collaboration during Trump's first term
