The sessions will be held monthly and anybody from Greater Manchester and surrounding areas is free to come
A support group for members of the Muslim community dealing with cancer is coming to Manchester this Autumn. The monthly sessions are open to anybody who is Muslim and is living with cancer, as well as their family and friends.
The Muslim Cancer Support Group has been set up by the charity Maggie’s, as a collaboration supported by The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and community leads. Anybody from Greater Manchester and the surrounding areas is free to join.Members will have the opportunity to speak to experts and receive support and information, find out more about the services on offer at Maggie’s as well as meet staff from The Christie to find out about potential research opportunities.
Numan said: “I would say to the Muslim community, and anyone who has cancer, don’t stay at home and suffer on your own. People with cancer need support, and there is so much out there. Even though Maggie’s is a professional place in the boundaries of the hospital, it is not like a hospital, more a place to socialise.
A committee of staff from Maggie’s and Muslim NHS workers from across the region have supported establishing the group, who will also support with facilitating each session. Maggie’s strapline has been changed to read “The Ummah’s home of cancer care”, which in Islam means a community of Muslims, and it is hoped sessions will take place on a monthly basis in-person and online.
